Write Your Novel or Memoir:
Quarantine Edition!

I have taught my "Write Your Novel or Memoir in a Year" class for over ten years, serving coffee on weekend mornings in my house and enjoying the incredible connections we all make as we plan and write our books. We’ve had a few book deals and countless friendships result, and while I always have a Skype student or two, I’ve never taken the plunge to try to teach the class online.

But the time has come!

HERE’S HOW IT WILL WORK:

You will begin this class with a vague notion of a novel or a memoir that you'd like to write. We will meet in a Zoom chat room six times for a two-hour class. I will email class notes and exercises before each meeting.

In class, I will talk about each aspect of the process: pre-writing, developing characters, plot structure, voice and point of view, the problematic middle of a novel, endings, and rewriting. I will not read anything until you hand in your novel or memoir at the end of the year. This class is NOT a workshop: while we will create smaller critique groups for sharing pages (and online meetups…and someday real-life meetups), you don't read other students’ work in class and they don't read yours.

This class will make you set aside the time and space to finish a manuscript, with a teacher (me!) to instruct and support you along the way. I will also be working on my new novel and we will share our struggles and triumphs. You will have one private online “coffee” to talk through your manuscript in detail, and you will receive a thorough critique at the end of the year (unless you opt out of this critique). I will give you deadlines and I'm always available via email to help you get through the rough spots.

Class dates are still a work in progress, but I hope to begin soon!

Please contact me for cost, to reserve your spot, or to ask any questions. Scholarships are available! I can’t wait to begin working with you!
